National Labs Management

We manage one of the world’s most preeminent research networks.

With more than 65 years’ experience managing national laboratories, UChicago helps ensure the nation’s security, economic prosperity and welfare through management of Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We also support world-leading research devoted to improving the human condition and revolutionize our understanding of the universe through our affiliation with the world-renowned Marine Biological Laboratory and founding-partner relationship with the Giant Magellan Telescope project, the University of Chicago coordinates one of the world's preeminent research networks. From historic experiments in nuclear energy, developmental biology, and particle physics to today's challenges of renewable power, dark matter, and microbial ecology, these institutions have long been at the vanguard of discovery.

The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research, Innovation and National Laboratories is responsible for stewardship and oversight of the University’s contracts with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage Argonne National Laboratory through UChicago Argonne, LLC and co-manage Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory through Fermi Research Alliance, LLC.

The University has contributed its expertise as the prime contractor for Argonne National Laboratory since the lab’s founding in 1946 and as co-contractor with the  Universities Research Association for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory since 2007.

On July 1, 2013, the MBL formally affiliated with the University of Chicago. The affiliation strengthens both institutions’ missions of leadership and innovation in scientific research and education. It also builds on shared values and historical ties between Chicago and the MBL, which was led by University of Chicago faculty members for the first four decades of its existence. Many active projects and collaborations between the University and these national benefit from the MBL's reputation as a convenor of science, both nationally and internationally.
